Off-season manager Dinty Child reports:
Hi everyone, just to let you know the island came through the storm pretty much unscathed. Will and Sam Lemonick were on for the duration and only had a short power outage. We had some minor damage to a couple of the boats and some dock posts because of the pounding waves, but that was it and they will be fixed this week. The yoga retreat is happily ensconced and we are fully operational.
If you have been planning to visit this fall, there is no need to change your plans!
The latest report from Chris Martin (Senior Biologist, New Hampshire Audubon) has some sad news. Here is an excerpt from his August 5 report.
Update: See below for some of the details Chris promised in his August 5 report.
BREAKING NEWS: While I was composing the message below, I received a report from Tony Tur (USFWS) that the VINS Raptor Center in Norwich, VT has received the carcass of black A/S (PTT 79606), the 1-yr old from the Blueberry Island nest whose transmitter mysteriously stopped functioning at the end of December when the bird was in northern NJ. According to available info, it was seen alive in late July in the vicinity of Lake Morey in Fairlee, VT, but was dead when turned in to VINS. More details as they become available.
[Chris reports on the travels of PTT 79607, another eagle born in 2011 in NH.]
Meanwhile, 79607's parents at Merrymeeting Marsh have successfully raised 2 fledglings in 2011, as have the pair at Blueberry Island on Winnipesaukee.
[Excerpted from Chris's August 10 report]
6/17/2010 - approx 9-wk old banded 629-52981 (right), black A/S (left), and fitted with an activated satellite PTT 79606. Sibling also banded and fitted with PTT and it died in southeastern NY on 11/5/2010 when it was struck by a vehicle while feeding on road-killed raccoon.
June thru 15 Nov 2010 - Black A/S stayed on natal territory on Lake Winnipesaukee
late Nov 2010 - Black A/S made first sizable move, to Harrisville and Dublin, NH
12/4/2010 - Black A/S at Canoe Brook Reservoir in Millburn Twsp., NJ (west of Newark, NJ)
12/14/2010 - Black A/S at Butler Reservoir in Kinnelon Borough, NJ (southwest of Mahwah, NJ)
12/24/2010 - Black A/S at Wanaque Reservoir in Ringwood Borough, NJ (southwest of Mahwah, NJ)
1/3/2011 - no transmission from Black A/S received by satellites starting with this date and continuing thru rest of study
8/2/2011 - The bird was seen in Fairlee, VT. VT Game Warden responded to call at start of August, and the eagle again flew into a tree when approached.
8/3/2011 - Black A/S reported dead, recovered and transported to VINS. Frozen after brief exam, PTT removed from bird (PTT missing its antennas now in possession of Chris Martin, NH Audubon, Concord, NH)
8/5/2011 - dead eagle reported to Anthony Tur, USFWS-NEFO, Concord, NH
8/9/2011 - Tur authorizes Chris Martin from NH Audubon to transport the carcass from VINS to USFWS-NEFO in Concord, NH, Martin picked up from VINS at 1030am, received at NEFO approx 2pm.
Next stop for this bird will be post-mortem exam at the USGS National Wildlife Health Center ( http://www.nwhc.usgs.gov/ ) in Madison, WI.
This project is made possible through a grant from the Merrimack River Bald Eagle Fund administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. NH Audubon's Conservation Department is conducting this work under supervision of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the N.H. Fish & Game Department.
