This was a typical scene of the arrival of the mailboat with the Mount Washington in the background. In those days, some people from other islands had their mail sent to 3 mile because it was easier to pick it up than to 'meet' the mailboat at its designated stop on Pine Island. Note the beautiful mahogany boat, driven by Dr. Henry Crane, a Bishop in the Detroit area for the Methodist Church, who has come for his mail. (photo by Ted Barker)

Taken about 1949. The singing group consists of, l to r, Arthur Morse, Crosby Baker (then manager), Lefty Mullins, Bob(?) Salinger, and a Mr. Oliver. The event was a skit night in the old rec hall. Labor Day activities were actually the day before Labor Day. Boat races and other silly events took place to end the season. There were no fall weekends in those days.

This picture was taken in March of 1950 which proves the point that (at that time) the buoys were left in the water year around. A friend of mine and I walked to the island and made the tracks in the snow just for the sake of a picture. They help point to the old rec hall and canoe house which burned in the 1962 fire.
